Good to be me: Unique Adventures of Everyman is a difficult book to categorize. The true stories and anecdotes in this book are uniquely mine. It is not an autobiography or a memoir in which I try to tell the complete story of my life, but instead a series of shorter snapshots from my life, from my first memory to the very recent past. They include many things that are quite humorous, adventures, emotions of all types, all things likely encountered by any baby boomer growing up in the Midwest. While our specific stories and memories will differ, we all have a first cogent memory. We all experienced going to school, growing up in the neighborhood, the growing pains of puberty, first love, family, birthdays and other holidays. We have all felt great joy and triumph as well as pain and sometimes seemingly hopeless despair. Not everyone has accidentally set their car on fire (chapter 30 - "Yep, darndest thing I ever seen.") But we have all done something dumb. There are 35 "chapters" in the book, each referring to a topical theme or anecdote. Among them include "Gladys, the closet," "Acne," "Losing my glasses," "Religion, church and God," "The mini-bike," and "Heroin, up close and personal." Many of them are quite funny, all are interesting in some way. When I first began writing, I thought that they would all be funny. Then, as my focus shifted instead to those experiences that were really important, notable and memorable I came to realize that some of them were just devoid of the opportunity to inject humor. Sometimes there are inevitable elements in life that are just sad, difficult, disappointing or depressing and those experiences and the emotions therein can be every bit as important and valuable as the humorous ones and as such have earned a place in the book. It is my hope that while I entertain with the telling of my own story via notable snapshots that I will also cause the reader to hearken back to their own past and perhaps relive a similar story that is uniquely their own.
