The Last School District: A Two-Act Play

This two-act play can be read aloud in undergraduate and graduate classrooms to facilitate the discussion of gender and sexual diversity in public schools in the United States. The play is based upon a fictional town where the school board is considering proposals to address the safety of gender and sexually diverse (GSD) students. Imagine that your town is considering adding gender expression and/or sexual orientation to the faculty and/or student handbooks. Imagine that you would need to appear before the school district board in order to accomplish such tasks. By reading this play and considering the discussion questions provided at the end, you will be more prepared for such an experience in your own hometown. This play is a guide for public school students, teachers, parents, and administrators; for university and college faculty and administrators; to consider and to dialogue with each other regarding GSD students and the many difficult challenges in making school a safe place for all students.
