From the Heart to the Page: An Anthology of Poems

Each of us go through many ups and downs in life and we all have our own way of dealing with the many emotions that we experience from euphoria to depression. I coped with a lot of self inflicted darkness in my life writing poems about how I was feeling. It helped me stay grounded and got me through the day. Then there were days when a random thought would result in musings on a page; or something I saw, heard or experienced was enough to trigger prose. For example Bird Watching came about from watching a seagull circling overhead rather menacingly. Bird Watching II was written 6 months later when re-reading Bird Watching I contemplated what would have happened if I tried to preempt the seagull. For a period of three years my life experiences were enough to motivate me in writing it all down as poems. This was an inexpensive way to get therapy and not have to justify myself to ineffectual psychotherapists. Until one day when speaking with a friend on the phone I was told to "get a life!" Stunned by the statement, it dawned on me that what I had been feeling; the darkness of depression and low self esteem was entirely my fault. I had chosen to feel this way and so I did. Consequently the writing stopped just as abruptly as I found that without the down feelings there was no motivation to further pursue my prose. Until now! Fifteen years later, I find that I have again made the same mistake and became my own obstacle in my path. An obstacle which has now been removed and the prose flows once more.
