A Journey into the Wilderness: Forty Days of Lent

We know Lent as a time to give something up, to seek forgiveness, and to try to build our relationship with God through prayer and spiritual exercises. Sometimes, if we reflect upon the spiritual exercises we go through, it is hard not to wonder: why do we bother? Is it just because that is what is expected of us? A Journey into the Wilderness presents an answer to that question in the form of daily reflections that lead the reader to consider the opportunity in Lent -- an opportunity to strike out towards a destination we've never seen along a path that only God knows. While Jesus fasted in the wilderness for 40 days before beginning his public ministry, our wilderness is not so much a place as a state of being. It is where we step outside of our comfort zone, away from the everyday boundaries, and go to a place where we must depend on God. The wilderness is different for each of us; each of us must find our wilderness and cross over into it to be alone, in our hearts and minds, with God.
