Waltzing With His Walker

Poised on the brink of living her dream, Maria was suddenly plunked down in a different reality. Having released all her belongings, save her massage table, clothes, and cat, she was ready to begin an adventure of travel, reconnecting with friends and family and seeing sights she'd remembered and read about. Her first stop was to be her dad's house in Albuquerque for a few days, then on to the next several places on her dream itinerary. A twist of events (and fate!) brought her, indeed, to Albuquerque, but for a year instead of a week. She knew there was no turning back, that she was there for the duration, and so dove in, by default, to the caring of, and living with, her 86 year-old father. It was clear that this was all in the Big Plan, and though she took it on kicking and screaming, she also realized that there was a lot of good to come from it all. Her dad was not always easy to be with (some may call this an understatement!), so she learned patience. He was in pain often, so she learned compassion. He grumbled and griped when he was sad, so she learned to hear the sorrow and not the barbs. In a word, it was a learning experience for both of them, and one that prompted her to write of her time with him both in the moment and after the fact. Written in poetry and prose, from letters and blogs, accounts and memories, Waltzing with His Walker is a compilation of vignettes from 'life with Dad' that shares the emotions and experiences, heartache and humor of a time that was difficult yet hugely rewarding, and one that brings to life the man that was her father.
