Nella Cole is a member of the hardy band of misfits who make up the Boston Times photography staff. The thirty-four-year-old shooter has been spending more and more time alone, living her life through her camera lens. When a skydiving troupe of Elvis impersonators meets a surprise Nor'easter over Dorchester Bay, the resulting news event (raining polyester gold lame) pits Nella against her chief rival, Boston Post photographer Chuck Roache. As punishment for getting beaten on the assignment by Roache, Nella's boss orders her to cover a congressional campaign, her least favorite assignment. Nella hates politics and politicians. That is, until she meets Len Marcus, a handsome, philanthropic developer running on the Democratic ticket. Marcus sees the woman hiding behind the camera, and Nella is forced to face the consequences of veering from her strict journalistic ethics. The campaign trail becomes populated with people who could end her career - among them her scheming nemesis Chuck Roache; the suspicious and protective political operative Shelton Hawes; and, most surprisingly, Jim Nolan, the award-winning, eagle-eyed Times reporter covering the candidates. Shoot follows Nella as she navigates the dramatic last months of the campaign - and the beginning of her new life.
