Three retired men have each served on the nuclear submarine USS Winfield Scott in their past. That ship was subsequently retired and has fallen into the hands of North Korea. A team of SEALs are planning to recapture the ship, and the three men are recruited from their civilian lives to train SEALs to sail it to safety. However, as the mission begins to fall apart, the three find that it can only be saved by inserting themselves into the dangerous operation. They must operate the nuclear submarine by themselves, working together to overcome technical constraints to drive the ship to safety while escaping hostile pursuers. They use their ingenuity and technical background, as well as good and bad luck, in this exciting plot of international naval conflict.
