Scotland County

With edges along the Carolina border and the Lumber
River, Scotland County boasts features reminiscent
of the country for which it was named. But the county has
held fast to much more than kilts and bagpipes; its Scottish
heritage is entwined with aspects of other cultures to produce
a rich palate of local history, stories, and legends. Although
a relatively young county, having been formed in 1899 from
Richmond County, the land has been inhabited for centuries
and maybe longer. Several writers believe that when North
Carolina became a royal colony in 1729, Scottish Highlanders
were already living in the area.
