Life was challenging and full of hardships for a woman alone in the Old West. It was a man's world and many of the men in it were rough, cruel and held little regard for a woman. Women who were not able to find suitable employment or a decent husband were often forced to work in the saloons as hostesses or live a short and dangerous life as a sporting gal who entertained all manner of men in the dusty rooms above the saloon.
