Stella Jackson, a biracial teen, finds herself an orphan after cancer claims her mother. Abandoned by her stepfather and uprooted from her suburban Chicago life, she is sent South to live with an elderly black grandmother whom she barely knows. Stella struggles to fit into her grandmother's lifestyle and small town world of Greenwood, Mississippi. A social outcast with few prospects of new friends her own age, Stella discovers no shortage of bigots and bullies in all colors and genders. She eventually befriends three teenage allies, an inspiring teacher and a mysterious old neighbor who introduces Stella to fortune telling through the use of Tarot cards. The fortune teller sees Stella's future and past lives. Triggered by an eating disorder and genetic illness, Stella encounters spells that cause her to experience previous lives. Is it time travel or does she merely commute through dreams? By exploring mysteries of her past, will Stella unlock answers to her present and future?
