Shiny Spaceships stuck on dead-end dirt roads is the second book of free verse poetry by Norton Nearly. Norton grew up in the wondrous days of space exploration. He was eleven when man first stepped on the moon. Life seemed so full of possibility, but so many of those opportunities seem to have faded away. The shiny spaceship known as America is driving down a dusty dirt road, quite possibly a dead-end road. Admittedly, Norton leans toward the pessimistic, but he is hopeful in Shiny Spaceships as well. Man has all the answers to solve all of man's problems, and some of them are not that complex. This book comments on the conditions we collectively face; it speaks to the frustrations and hopes felt by so many people today. Norton Nearly is the pen name, for an average guy who watches from his Corporate world office. He writes under this name, phonetic versions of his two grandmother's maiden names, out of honor to them and also to obscure his true identity so he can write freely and from the heart. Admittedly, Nearly exhibits a bit of split personality disorder: weekday businessman John who provides for his family, and weekend bohemian Norton who philosophizes and creates art. The two collaborated on the research for Shiny Spaceships, but Norton wrote the book. Nearly writes in clear language and easily understandable imagery so that those who don't get poetry can get his poetry. This writing is not about obscuring thoughts so that most will never figure them out. It is about conveying observations that are accessible to anyone willing to give them some thought.
