In a world where it's only a matter of time before your individuality marks you for deletion, which is code for death sentence, for being unique and non compliant, you're also at risk for finding out who and what you truly are. Sixteen year old Evie Pratt lives in a controlled society. Her entire world is encased inside a dome, which marks the edges of safety, but these safety regulations are falsified. Everyone is controlled by a neural inhibitor program, which controls all of the aspects that make people distinctly human; want, love, hope, longing, etc. Everyone is drone-like, and safe, according to those in charge. But Evie is unplugged; her thoughts and behaviors can't be overridden by the program or the medication used to enhance the program. She displays her humanity and that is what threatens to reveal her as an individual. The director of the society seeks out those who can think for themselves, because they are dangerous and threaten the collective hive. When the director finds out she's noncompliant, she is tracked down and mark for deletion. With the help of, more people like her; Evie flees outside the dome. Instead of finding promised horrors, she finds a world worth living in, a natural world; and people that aren't made to be drones, people who live freely. War is something that has never been introduced to the citizens inside the dome. But outside the dome there are native people and free people who are willing to go to war because basic human rights are being denied to an entire populace. Evie finds the courage to re-enter the dome and put a plan into action to unplug all of the residents; even if it means she must forfeit her own life and newly realized freedom.
