People in Arizona Territory are starting to notice strange things going on around them and even within the fabric of their own lives. The territorial hospital in Phoenix is overwhelmed with patients all exhibiting the same puzzling symptoms: they experience terrifying dreams of monstrous pursuit, when awake they sense that the threats they have dreamed are real and most puzzling of all they feel a total inability to prevent these fearful things from occurring. Meanwhile, Matthew Sandstrom is drawn back into the fray. He once again calls upon his cohorts, Mose Broadax, Little Bear, Bird Who Talks and even his former lover an Apache named Red Root. But they are not the only people involved. The sheriffs of three counties in two territories strive to solve several horrific crimes that make no sense to any rational person. Within it all Sergeant Erickson of the Chaos police force tries to maintain some kind of balance of normalcy in his life despite all the strange experiences he has had. Arriving in the territory an ethnologist is tasked with studying the enigmatic Su'mok Indians. He finds his job borders on the impossible until he makes a startling discovery that causes him run for his life and the sake of his sanity. In the mines of Chaos, men struggle against the mind numbing labor and the insidious effects of unseen forces. Violence escalates including an enormous rise in suicides and officials fear that any chance they have to reap the benefits of their investments may be endangered. As a result a crack team of strike breakers from the famous Pinkerton Agency in Chicago are called in with disastrous results. All this culminates in the final meeting between the various combatants and the enigmatic Dark One, a battle that must be won to save the human race.
