On the 19th July 1916, Australia suffered its worst single day loss in its military history at the Battle of Fromelles in northern France. In just a two hour period on the evening of this infamous day, over 2,000 men would be killed with hundreds more horrifically wounded - in total 5,533 casualties. As part of the allied offensive at the Somme in northern France, Fromelles is not only remembered for this terrible loss, but also encapsulates the gross incompetence of British command which oversaw all ANZAC efforts at the Somme. This book aims to bring to life the story of Fromelles, but not through a mere chronological examination of events. The book takes a more human perspective, following in particular the experiences of six young Australians who sail from the shores of Port Melbourne, on to the UK for final preparation and then to the killing fields of northern France. It is a story that speaks of courage and enduring mateship as these ANZACS and their peers initially begin a journey of adventure, but eventually their innocent world view is shattered by the horrors each would endure in the battlefield ahead.
