Canada: 2015 Human Rights Report

Canada is a constitutional monarchy with a federal parliamentary government. In a free and fair multiparty federal election held in October, the Liberal Party, led by Justin Trudeau, won a majority of seats in the federal parliament and formed a government. Civilian authorities maintained effective control over the security forces. The principal human rights problems included violence against women, disparities in living conditions between indigenous and nonindigenous peoples, and trafficking in persons. The government took steps to investigate, prosecute, and punish all officials who committed violations, whether in the security forces or elsewhere in the government.
