Deuteronomy is one of those forgotten books of the Bible. People talk about those lost books of the Bible, but why worry about those, if they don't know what is in the books Moses wrote, and why he wrote them? Deuteronomy should be referred to as the book of REVIEW. In his book, Moses wrote about what happened during that forty year journey through the wilderness. Moses kept repeating the word remember, to tell Israel how to look back. We have to remember one thing about the audience Moses addressed on the plain overlooking to Jordan River. Moses addressed the younger generation. Their parents died in the wilderness because they were afraid to follow God into the promised land. They died because they were afraid to accept the priesthood God offered them one month after leaving Egypt. Jesus had to die to restore that offer. But today, this world is filled with people carrying that same fear as they wander their self made wilderness of sin, greed, and the worst giant to face, self. Moses had a unique way of telling Israel to remember. A code word telling Israel to look back. Israel had to remember the days they spent in Egypt as children. Moses knew their memories were limited, and many details died in that wilderness. That is why it was more important for the second generation to remember and teach future generations what it meant to be a slave living in a nation sin. Moses had a second code word, "when you enter the promised land." That told Israel to look ahead. Those code words tell us when to look back, or forward to the New Testament for additional information about the lessons Moses taught. Moses was a teacher who spent his last days on earth teaching his children, the people he cared for and comforted for forty years, how to survive in the promised land. We are told, getting into the Promised Land is the easy part, and too often ignore books like Deuteronomy. I'm not sure why those books Moses wrote are ignored these days. After writing this book, I learned why Moses used to be referred to as God's greatest prophet in the Old Testament. I've grown to respect the man because of what he accomplished, but most of all, his ability to explain the relationship he had with God. This is NOT a self help book based on the Bible. It is a book Moses wrote, telling us how to let God lead. This is a book telling us how to do one of the most difficult things we will ever be asked to do, look back on our lives of sin and slavery with totally honesty, then teach others what we've learned. After that, we are ready to take a refreshing look at the New Testament, with its clear and concise explanations of God's promises.
