First Buy a Boat chronicles the events of one family's journey from middle America to the tropics to "re-invent" their lives. What they lack in the way of sailing experience, they have in bravado. Along the way, they get a double dose of humility and joy. In 2001, Kathlyn and Jim Mickel with their newborn Kara and toddler Connor, pack up all their worldly goods into four suitcases and fly to Tortola, BVI. The plan was to buy a sailboat, fix it up, and sail the Caribbean. The plan quickly goes awry. With two young kids and no place to call home, they must adapt and chart a new course if they are going to keep it all together.
