Grant Davies was abandoned by his father at the age of three. Actually his father ran off with another woman but Grant took it personally, thinking that perhaps there was some fault in him. He used to wait by the window waiting for his daddy to come home and pick him up and hug him. Now he was gone without even a word to him. It was a rejection that would affect him for the rest of his life. His feelings were reinforced when his mother remarried three years later and his stepfather paid little attention to him. His stepfather was a hard working somewhat bitter blue collar worker who told him that you had to do it to the other guy before he did it to you. It was no wonder then that when he became a teenager he began to break into houses to steal items that he could sell for money. In high school he dated and got along well with friends but he withheld any strong emotional involvement, remembering the hurt inside when an emotional commitment is rejected. In his twenties he developed an interest in art and became a successful art thief. Unfortunately he made the mistake of stealing very valuable paintings from a wealthy attorney who represented a criminal mob. He had no way of knowing the paintings were being held by the attorney in trust for the mob as part of a money laundering scheme. The attorney publicizes the theft to an extent that it is impossible for Grant to sell the paintings. As a result Grant has to devise a dangerous plan to ransom the paintings back to the mob which means the mob will have an opportunity to kill him when he transfers the paintings for $100,000. Grant realizes the danger and successfully works out the transfer and believes he gets away with the money but the mob tracks him and he is almost killed. While in the hospital and in a coma he experiences a beyond human sorrowful sound that pervades his mind when he awakes. Although he doesn't understand it he never forgets it. Now as he is recovering he meets a beautiful Christian nurse, Theresa. With Grant it's love at first sight to the extent that he abandons his fears of emotional entanglement and romances her with all his heart; telling her that to him she is a flower blooming in the shower of an April day, that she is the sun sparkling off a crystal lake on a day in June. Theresa is impressed but cautious. Nevertheless she witnesses to him and when he shows an interest in Christianity and attends a mid-week service at her church she begins to think Grant may be the man God has sent her in answer to her prayers. Before the transfer Grant had changed his name and was posing as a computer technician as part of his plan to avoid the mob. Now he realizes Theresa knows him in his undercover role and their relationship is based on a series of lies. However Grant can't give up his love for her and as they attend church together Christianity becomes real to him and he accepts Jesus as his savior. Theresa is now convinced that he is the man sent by God for her and they are both deeply in love. Grant now realizes his life and deception has created an almost impossible dilemma. He knows his past and his lies will never be accepted by Theresa unless he can convince her that his faith is real and he has been forgiven by God. Grant's faith convinces him that he must return the money which leads to another dangerous encounter with the mob enforcer in a public restaurant and in the encounter he is wounded. The event creates media attention and in the process Grant's past is revealed. Theresa is crushed and vows to never see him again. He is left with tears running down his cheeks, having experienced the ultimate rejection due to his own foolish schemes. He must now avoid prison and win back Theresa's love. Now the meaning of the great sorrow he was shown while in a coma is revealed to him and this revelation leads to a true test of his faith.
