Sister Girl: A Play Based On The The True Story Of A Black Female Civil War Spy

$17.32

Mary Elizabeth Bowser, an emancipated slave, had just graduated from college in 1861 when her former owner, Elizabeth Van Lew, the Spy Mistress of Richmond, Va., recruited her to spy on Jefferson Davis in his Civil War White House. Bowser spent many years there pretending to be a half-witted slave named Sister Girl. She stole secret documents which were smuggled to the North by Van Lew. Battle after battle went against the South, and Davis never suspected Bowser's role in these defeats. At the end of the war, when Davis was fleeing Richmond dressed as a woman, Bowser set fire to his White House and ran off into the night. She was never heard of again. This play celebrates the heroic actions of this unsung heroine. -- Back cover.
