Martha Jenkins is a widow who has lived in the same council flat in Bermondsey for years, but it has really gone downhill in the past few years. Groups of agressive youths hung around the estate and terrorised anyone who passed them. The problem was that Martha's teenage granddaughter Angel was friendly with them. One night when they take things too far and murder an elderly neighbour everybody is outraged, but too scared to speak out.Martha bumps into Billy Robertson and old friend of the family, who has just relocated from Spain, and she tells him how bad things have got in the area. Billy lets her know that now his firm are back in the manor there will be a lot of changes. She likes Billy but she isn't keen on the fact that he is a crime boss, but she feels the area needs somebody like him to put things back in order. They start to become close, but their relationship is fast tracked into a live in situation when Angel has to get away from those who she once called her friends. They suspect that she has told everybody that they are responsible for the old man's death, and they intend to make her pay.
