Captain Rusty Sage returns home to Buckhorn Texas after being honorably discharged from the Texas Volunteers at the end of the Civil War. Upon his arrival he finds his family and their ranch have been destroyed by raiders during the War. With nothing left for him in Texas he heads north looking for work as a ranch hand. Rusty eventual finds work on the Rocking Horse Ranch out side of the cow town of River Bend in California.
