Born on July 21, 1898, in Oak Park, Illinois, he became an author after World War I, where he was an ambulance driver for the Italian Army. In 1937 and 1938, he covered the Spanish Civil War for the American Newspaper Alliance. Ernest Hemingway moved to Cuba in approximately 1940, and lived at San Francisco de Paula, about 14 miles east of Havana. Mrs. Ernest Hemingway, the former Martha Gelhorn, was invited to come to Washington, D.C. to visit the week of October 12, 1942, as a personal guest of Mrs. Franklin Roosevelt. In January 1961, Hemingway became ill and was a patient at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Mr. Hemingway committed suicide in 1961.
