Dunbar was an African American writer in the late 1800's. Booker T Washington called him the "Poet Laureate of the Negro Race". He wrote novels, short stories, poetry and a play. His writing style is known for its colorful language and use of dialect. Many consider Dunbar to be the first great African American writer and poet.
