Also known as "Dr. Eliot's Five Foot Shelf," it represented Eliot's belief that a basic liberal education could be gleaned by reading from an anthology of works that could fit on five feet of bookshelf. Volume XXII features a translation by Irish scholar SAMUEL HENRY BUTCHER (1850-1910) and Scottish academic ANDREW LANG (1844-1912) of the epic 8th-century BC Greek adventure The Odyssey, attributed to the poet Homer but originally told in oral form.
