The Siege of Vicksburg is over, and for Lummy Tullos, so is the war. Weary of battle, loss, and death, Lummy is determined to return to Winn Parish to salvage what little life he has left. He sneaks away from the Confederate Army as it marches from Vicksburg to a parole camp with his closest friend, J.A. Together they evade Union patrols, cross the Mississippi River, and dodge the Rebel Home Guard as they find their way home. After reuniting with his friend and former slave Old Bart, Lummy learns the truth surrounding his wife Susannah's death. Regaining strength to become the leader of a ragtag army of former Confederate soldiers, Lummy depends on Old Bart and J.A. to help keep him sane as they hunt down the outlaw Home Guard responsible for mayhem and death across the parish. During his journey, Lummy is presented with the opportunity to live up to his new oath of setting men free. He comes home ready to lay down his weapons of war only to find his fight for justice has just begun.
