The Heroic Drummer is a life story of Liang Hongyu (1102 - 1151), a famous female general in China, during the Jin-Song wars against the Jurchen-led Jin Dynasty. Her name "Hongyu" means "Red Jade" in Chinese. She was a historical as well as legendary figure, remembered chiefly for her skills in archery and drumming techniques. She applied her drumming skill in battlefields along with the use of banners to initiate a field communication system, which led to victories against much greater foes. Her childhood idol was Fa Mullen and she practiced martial arts to follow the footsteps of the famous heroine from Sui Dynasty. Her world fell apart during her late teens and she was forced into performing as a wrestler; a female slave wore nothing but a loincloth fighting in the arena. As luck would have it, she escaped from the wrestling arena into a house of courtesans, where she met her one true love and her destiny. She fought the formidable foe in the north for Song Dynasty along with national heroes Han Shizhong and Yue Fei. Their spirits have become legends to inspire the following generations of Chinese people, in their fight against foreign invaders.
