This is the story of Canadian Father of Confederation, George Brown, and his crucial contribution to the creation of the nation of Canada in 1867. The story begins with his family background and follows the family's emigration from Scotland to New York, then, after six years, to Toronto, Upper Canada, in 1843. Brown quickly came to prominence in the colony as he founded and published its leading newspaper, the Toronto Globe from 1844 to his untimely death in 1880. His interest in reforming the government of the colony led him into politics and eventually to leadership of the Reform Party of Canada West. This is the direct ancestor of the Liberal Party of Canada, which has formed Canada's governments more than any other party since Confederation in 1867. Brown's career was always guided by his zeal and integrity. He had strong opinions and spoke what he believed and thought with sincerity and without guile. He was a masterful speaker and debater and played the primary role in bringing about the "Great Coalition" of Liberals and Conservatives in the United Province of Canada in 1864 which opened the road to the joining the all the British Colonies of North America into the nation of Canada. His role has been undervalued and under-recognized by Canadian historians, who have accorded the lion's share of recognition to Sir John A. Macdonald, Brown's great adversary in Canadian politics. This book is a short biography accessibled to readers from age twelve to adult. It pays particular attention to Brown's motivation in pursuing the work and causes he fought for. Brown's life was amazingly consistent in that respect, and was based on his personal commitment to conduct himself according to what he believed to be a Christian man's way of doing what he felt called to do.
