Llona return to their homeland from exile in Eleyse! The witch Calais has suborned Volsinii invaders and they are ravaging the old kingdom. Time runs faster in Radak than in Eleyse due to open gates between worlds and soon many will coalesce into one with the witch as empress over all. Winter is fast closing in and King Erose leads a small band back into his devastated kingdom to stop Calais and finds he must also find the missing gate keeper and the key to the master gate. Only with those in place can the time dilation be stopped and her plan of domination be avoided. There are many inhabitants of the land who must be won over to his side and not all are Llona or willing to help save the kingdom. Erose knows the struggle will be a fierce one and one where he may lose not only those that ride with him but his own life. He is king and will do what he must despite the crushing blame he puts on himself for abandoning Radak many years ago. One he trusted then turned traitor and that treachery had far reaching effects. So much time has passed since the Llona exile began and the king's return that he and his companions are unknown except for children's bedtime stories. The Llona Erose finds now cannot even change sexes and the females are never warriors as are found in his contemporaries. It is up to his strategos and the Sword of the Llona to show just how important strong women warriors are to the king's efforts. The family Erose left behind has been reduced to one young man who has little idea how important he is to the king and strives to be the type of warrior he has only heard about in those nursery tales. Their quest to save Radak and the other threatened worlds is costly and but the effort to gain mastery over Calais is deemed worthy no matter what is lost.
