This apartment dog is affectionate, playful, intelligent, gentle with kids, and can tolerate solitude relatively well. He is robust, and easy to educate, but he needs a master with a lot of character. But be careful, he can be aggressive towards strangers, he doesn't always get along well with other animals, and he likes being the center of the world. In conclusion, his master needs to be firm when it comes to respect and hierarchy in the family. Like all terriers, he will have the tendency to run away, that's why he may need a proximity collar in the garden. You should never forget that he was a relentless mouse chaser: this is the job for which he was selected in the first place. He is a great first dog for a novice master. He is perfect for a single person. He is ideal for old people if he is perfectly educated. The York is very praised in beauty contests, but you have to groom him and curl his hair before the contest in order to keep him clean when he plays in the garden. The maintenance of his coat requires a lot of work, if you intend to compete with him in beauty contests. If you don't, however, you should cut his fur slightly so it doesn't touch the floor. That should facilitate the maintenance of his coat. If you want a York in line with the breed's criteria, you should avoid pet stores, individuals, and prioritize dog farms. If you have an adult York or a hybrid puppy (cross with a Yorkshire terrier) in your home, you have to be careful: do not judge a book by its cover. The York's character is originally aggressive and defiant, and he can only be balanced through education and good environment. It is not rare to see hostility and aggression in a York. Education, environment and love will prevent these flaws. This may be surprising, but a York absolutely needs to be educated! He needs it. A Yorkshire will answer with a growl and a bite if kids pull his hair, or torture him in any way, or if an adult hits him. The Yorkshire is only easygoing if his master confirms the rules. The primitive personality of the Yorkshire reappears when he is faced with small preys, and he will sometimes make holes in your garden.
