It is the true story of me and my two mestiza sisters being raised by our Mexican American father in just pre-and-post Civil Rights Era, Dallas, Texas. At that time, Dallas was deeply embedded with a racial caste system that severely marginalized people of Hispanic descent. It is the story of my people, Mexican Americans, when we had to ride at the back of the bus; when we were turned away from restaurants because of the color of our skin; and when we were not given the same opportunities as people of European/Caucasian descent. Being raised by a single father in the late 1960's and 1970's was rare, but in Mexican American communities, it was basically unheard of. Memoirs that are similar to my story are Barefoot Heart: Stories of a Migrant Child, by Elva Trevino Hart. Another one is, A Tale of Survival: An Hispanic Woman's Memoir, by Grace Flores-Hughes.
