Sarah is fourteen and an A student at a school for girls. She is restless with her life of routines so when she is invited to join a group of girls in her class who call themselves The Write Hers, she eagerly accepts. The Write Hers are composed of Felicity, the confident leader, Darla, always obedient, and Megan, the only girl in the class who has a friend who is a boy. The goal of the club is to write stories from personal experiences, however, due to the self-perceived dullness of their days, the girls create drama in their own and others' lives in order to generate story material. Influenced by family, new friends, and a favorite English teacher, Sarah moves away from being insecure and "plain Sarah." She begins to understand that the people she admires are neither perfect nor consistent. She must mold her own creed by which to live, one that allows her to be less than perfect.
