This novel is based on the real-life tragedy of Daniel George Dodge, heir to the Dodge Motor Company fortune. George Rausch, our fictionalized representation of Dodge, drowned in the North Channel of Georgian Bay on August 15, 1938. He was twenty-one years of age and had been married for thirteen days to a telephone operator from Manitoulin Island making $15 dollars a week. An explosion occurred, injuring several people, including the young millionaire. George's new bride loaded the injured into a speed boat and headed to the nearest hospital, miles away. Everyone made it-everyone except George Rausch.
