The other-worldly Realm of Long Ago is under the threat of what the aged whaer-wizard Urwell calls the "Peril." He enlists the aid of the doltish-faced Madrel of Seghun and Baerek, the savage man-wolf of the Vastlands to undertake a quest. The trio of old man, idiot and beast travel through the lands of imperial power gone mad, tawdry culturalism, stodgy intellectualism, villainy deemed legitimate business practice, listless existence, and a slew of other deviances. The hope is to find the means for enlightenment which reveals the baselessness which has wracked the Realm. The whole volume becomes a grandiose analogy for the mission of that oft misunderstood entity called 'Church.' The book is not so much a defense of the Church, but an explanation of it. It is the job of the reader to patiently strive to catch the point of the whole story. It is the mission behind the mission of the story-teller of Seghun, whose tales of wise, courageous, and determined people reveal the enthusiasm for the precious quality which the inhabitants of the Seghuni Range call the 'Treasure.'
