Yearning to Breathe Free began as a newspaper column in the Benicia Herald that brought together poetry and prose voicing the fears, tensions, inspirations, hopes, and oddities experienced during the social distancing prompted by COVID 19. Despite our isolation, events contrived a widened awareness of the shared human condition. We could not maintain a distance between ourselves and the manifestations of embedded racism, economic hardship, climate crisis, and threats to democracy. The focus for the newspaper columns expanded. The anthology Yearning to Breathe Free is composed of the newspaper columns that ran from April 1, 2020 through Election Day. Each day's entry may include one, two, or three writings. The format is that of a community journal. Poets, writers, and people who had never previously written poetry or prose for publication sent their material. Not every submission was published, but everyone who submitted was published at least once. Giving voice to the community was one purpose of the column. Some material from sources beyond our time frame and geographic area was also included for deepened perspective and insight.
