It is important spiritually -- and eternally -- within the Mormon culture for married couples to produce babies. So, when many residents of Central Utah have trouble living up to that standard, they turn to fertility specialist LaMont DeWitt for help in this satire by Diane Marie Cole. Lo and behold, the doctor has a special talent for creating babies -- that look a lot like himself. Some patients are less than tickled with this outcome and appeal to church and civil authorities to stop and punish the man. Ultimately, they must take the matter into their own hands.Since the 1980s, cases of fertility doctors secretly using their own sperm to impregnate patients has attracted the attention of various writers, filmmakers and television producers. By placing this story in Utah, the author shows the havoc such a doctor might wreak in an insular community where doctors are trusted to do the right thing but sometimes don't. The choice of settings was natural, given the fact that both the author and one such specialist were raised in the headquarters of the Mormon Church.
