The Clandestine Lives of Paintings in Poems is a collection of ekphrastic poetry or, more simply: poems inspired by art, music, films and dreams. Much of the inspirational artwork featured in the book with each poem, was done by Northern California artists as well as one landscape by Matisse and a portrait done by Modigliani. The author doesn't "interpret" the paintings so much as reflect on them in different ways, using poetry to make the reader appreciate something new, and often unexpected, in the images.
