On April 29, 1975 I was at work at the United States Embassy when I was told I had 15 minutes to locate my family and escape Vietnam. With only the clothes on our back, my wife, my children, and my young brother-in-law began a harrowing journey. Never abandoning human tradition and core values I learned from my father, my grandfather and my years as a monk I left the world as I knew it behind. From war, poverty and armed checkpoints to self-evident truths and unalienable rights, on April 29, 1975 the United States of America saved my life.
