Cecelia: Cause of Death, is a memoir about my mother. It is the story of her short life and tragic death. It is the 1930s, when Cecelia marries a farmer some thirteen years her senior. She had just turned seventeen. A few years went by, and the failing farmer had had enough of the dirt-farm. He packed his bags, and headed for California; leaving Cecelia to fend for herself with five babies. Somehow, Cecelia manages to twirl her world around with unbound courage and sheer determination - she will find a way. With minimal education, her choices were slim; she had to find a home for her children. So, she answers an ad in a farm magazine for a housekeeper for two bachelors, on another farm in Minnesota. Unbeknownst to her, she finds herself in the throes of abuse, not only to herself, but also to her children. It is a glimpse of the hard times experienced in rural America during the depression, dust-bowl and war years. I have shared some of Cecelia's clever and notable life lessons, in hopes that some of her wisdom will be passed along. The story is honest and quite graphic at times.
