This book is a call to action. Let's take back our families, our churches, and our lives! We can't change the church itself, but we can allow God to change us. We can be the change we want to see. Are you hurting? Have you been hurt? Do you know someone who has been hurt? There is genuine healing and hope in Christ. It's often difficult to believe, but even the most horrible abuse can be healed and redeemed. This is the memoir of one woman's journey from the depths of sexual and emotional abuse to healing and freedom in Christ. Her healing and recovery were delayed and complicated by brokenness within the church and its leaders. She explores this experience frankly and teaches us what we need to know to avoid making the same mistakes with others. She talks about Spiritual Warfare and its life transforming role in healing. The church should be the Body of Christ, a safe haven, as it works in His name to extend healing, grace, forgiveness, and freedom to survivors of a broken and desolate world. But we're often too concerned with how we look and what people will think about us to be honest about our struggles. It's long past time to get real about our pain and our injuries. Every day, people walk into our churches straining to carry the agony of PTSD, abandonment, rape, emotional and sexual abuse, loss, loneliness, and rejection. Instead of being greeted with grace, understanding, and support, they leave damaged, rejected, or even further victimized by spiritual abuse. It's perilously easy for us in the church to get so caught up with the image of the church and the reputation of its leaders that we minimize or overlook the truth of what's going on inside and the damage we're doing. If the church won't take care of the dysfunction within, how can it be a spokesperson for Christ? How can we spread the Good News with any credibility when we so blatantly and horrifically violate God's Word? We must first look in the mirror to remove the planks from our own eyes so we can see clearly to help others with the specks in theirs. The best possible situation, of course, is for there to be no dysfunction, for the church to be a safe, healthy place for hurting people to find refuge. For leaders to act properly in the Name of Jesus. But when that's not the case, what would Jesus do? Would he sweep it under the rug to preserve the reputation of the institution or would he drive the moneylenders and sellers out of the temple court?Jesus very famously berated the church leaders (the Pharisees) over their treatment of hurting, needy people. We are called to do the same thing. Just as Nehemiah worked to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, here is inspiration to seek salvation and hope in Jesus Christ so He can rebuild our hearts and minds in His image with Him as our firm foundation. This is not a fairy tale, but a story of salvation and redemption. The pain of this broken world can leave our souls shattered into pieces, but Jesus is our savior, our Knight in Shining Armor, willing and able to bind up our broken hearts and teach us how to put on the Armor of God.
