In this historical novel, set in the early twentieth century South India, a young woman dies just a week after her second marriage. The patriarch informs everyone that it is a natural death and admonishes from spreading false rumours, but the woman's son does not accept it and decides to make a discreet personal investigation. He quietly makes inquiries, but that does not lead him anywhere. The persons he considers directly or indirectly responsible for his mother's death die one after another in most mysterious circumstances, and the son is constrained to abandon further probing. Years later, while accompanying an old friend for negotiating an important acquisition, his companion who was in a highly inebriated condition brags of the many murders committed by him and claims that God does not reckon them as wrongdoings. Instead, he says, God has bestowed wealth, position and no power on earth could do him any harm. Shocked, the woman's son realizes that the real murderer he has been searching for all these years is walking by his side, but before he could take action an unexpected twist saves him from becoming a murderer himself.
