Shapiro's Revenge is the second novel in the Nick Shapiro series. It picks up where the first book, Shapiro's Plan, ends, with Nick returning home to the United States from Israel after a lengthy self-imposed exile.Nick Shapiro is a middle-aged lawyer who was tired of the daily grind of two- bit divorce cases and clients and corrupt judges who seemed to take pleasure in cheating him. Most of all, he was tired of being left in the dust by the younger generation of sharp-practicing lawyers who didn't know a canon of ethics from a paddle ball racket. The huge money case had always eluded Nick, snatched away by the big-time, wealthy attorneys in Harris County who could afford to finance them, and spread the right money around to get them.Just when he was ready to quit law and sell hotdogs on a downtown street corner for a living, the case of a lifetime comes, as if by magic to Nick... a baby killed in a rear end car collision, and there's plenty of insurance money.Normally, Nick would refer a case that big to one of the sharks downtown to turn into gold and give him an easy referral fee in the six figures. But Nick was determined that this case would be his last stand in life, he either wins it on his own, or self-destructs in trying. He hires two unlikely lawyers as associates to assist him and his secretary, Carol Emry, to prosecute the case. Rene Handeman is the beautiful schemer who doesn't hesitate to resort to sexual influence to get what she wants. Shlomi is an Orthodox Jew who provides a middle ground of rationality. They all combine, with the help of a not so legitimate private investigator, Jerry Dockett, to win the case and put a three million dollar plus fee in Nick Shapiro's pocket.Just when Shapiro thinks all of his problems are solved, his life begins to unravel. Rene steals his money and flees to Spain. Shapiro gets sued for malpractice by the parents of the dead baby for not getting them enough money. His wife, Marilee, who is having an affair with her future divorce lawyer, files for divorce to get half the money she doesn't yet know is gone, and she bars Nick from seeing his children. Carol, Nick's logngtime secretary and confidant, becomes an unwitting accomplice in Rene's theft. She leaves him, down and alone...and broken. On Shlomi's advice, Nick goes to Israel to find the answers to the meaning of his lost life, which, by this time, is not worth pushing a hotdog cart down the street in front of the courthouse.Jerry Dockett , the sometimes sober private investigator who helped Nick win the big case, tracks Rene to Spain and takes back Nick's stolen money from her, but not after some gunplay. Dockett contemplates keeping the money for himself, but in a moment of clarity he sends a cashier's check to Nick in Jerusalem for the full amount of the big case fee, less $100,000 he keeps for his efforts.Nick is nursed back to health by the grandmotherly Anna Goldberg, who found him wandering the streets of Jerusalem in a daze. After he gets the money from Dockett, Nick gets on a plane and flies back to the states to get his life back, the life that should have been, the life he earned.Shapiro's Revenge begins with Nick landing at JFK Airport in New York, thinking that he is a new man and that his life will finally be back to where it should have been after he won the big case. He quickly finds that the people who were out to do him harm before have not given up. Only this time, there is a new big case that comes his way, one that holds him, his money, and his life hostage until he wins it... or can take revenge against those who imposed it upon him.
