This endearing and extremely comical author has already bull-dozed his way through his war career - To Sea in a Sieve ("Easily the funniest autobiography of the year" NANCY SPAIN) - and his early family life- Bulls in the Meadows ("An enchanting book" JOHN CONNELL). Now the Bull charges with the same engaging hilarity through his acting career - on stage, screen and 'telly'. It is not, as the author is at pains to point out, a success story - a Seven Steps to Stardom type of story; in fact, in spite of having from time to time made a substantial hit (more recently in Waiting for Godot) he starts his book by saying "It is simply the tale of a busker who is at the crossroads". Should he give up the stage and try to earn his living as an author? However, as his tale unfolds we can see how Peter Bull loves his profession and all - or nearly all! - the people with whom he has been working for the last 25 years or so. Even in the midst of calamities, or at any rate at the end of them (and he tells of a number of fabulous flops such as The Boy David) he finds something and/or someone to warm his heart. "Such is the power of the magic that I would rather go pottering ineffectually along in the hope that every decade I may land up in another The Lady's Not For Burning ..." For theatrical enthusiasts this is a 'must'. But in our opinion this book will appeal to the vast majority of those millions who have seen Peter Bull on their TV screens, even though they only "know his face, but ..."
