Running parallel to the modern story is the trajectory of the birth of the great Italian opera Simon Boccanegra by Guiseppe Verdi that flopped at its first performance in Venice during 1857 and the relationship between the poet, Arrigo Boito and the composer, whilst revising the opera. The young Boito and the older Verdi having previously fallen out for eleven years, nearly fell out again when Boito's suggested a 'homosexual' element to the opera's plot which Verdi strongly rejected The two stories collide together, as the modern characters that are involved in performances of Simon Boccanegra, come to the shocking realisation that their stories have uncanny resemblances to the plot development of the opera.
