Taran Leven is determined to find out the truth behind her sister's disappearance fourteen years ago. Lisa Leven was working as a caravan guard, making the dangerous journey through the bandit-ridden wastes between the cities of Prera when her convoy was attacked.

Lisa had been fifteen, trying to support her sick mother and sister, and there had been only two glimmers of hope in her life. One was the prospect of charity from the Order of the Mother, a powerful religious organisation worshipping Prera's guardian deity, offered to her by the enigmatic Sister Laura. The other was a burgeoning relationship with a young man serving in Prera's Veil Corps, soldiers blessed with magic powers to be used as weapons in the perpetual war with the neighbouring country of Jescait.

In the present, Taran's hunt for the truth begins to draw attention, and soon enough she's the one being hunted. Now she finds herself drawn into a conflict between the highest powers of Prera and their enemies in the shadows. Her life and the lives of her friends are at risk and she will have to make a choice: to surrender and forget about what happened to her sister or to fight back - and start a war which could bring about the destruction of the country she calls home.
