Celebrate With Gratitude: 20 Holiday Poems For Kids

My children love holidays but I realized I have been missing the opportunity to teach them WHY we actually celebrate holidays. Christmas sure, but can I really explain St. Patrick's Day? What does Cinco de Mayo signify? Do they understand Memorial Day and the 4th of July or are they more worried about BBQ and fireworks? Why do we celebrate Martin Luther King? With that in mind I decided to use this children's book as an opportunity to teach and encourage celebration, for a purpose. Celebration without a focus on gifts! Celebration of the history of the holidays we recognize. Celebration with a touch of gratitude! The book entertains and impresses with its images but more importantly it creates an opportunity for a conversation between parents and children. The book opens the door to a discussion about what's really important amidst all of the distractions that holidays can sometimes create. The book includes 20 original entertaining poems and amazing illustrations. The poems flow in chronological holiday order through the year. Each time we reach a holiday I pull out the book and the kids love it! They get to enjoy the pictures and we both get to learn something along the way. Hope you and your family do as well. It was a real challenge coming up with images that made a point but did not distract from the illustrations. The combination of illustrations mixed with black and white photography has been a huge hit with children. It's different and they love it! I also included in the book a place for them to draw their favorite holiday, list holiday traditions, and list their favorite gifts (given and received!). Great way to personalize the book and a fun way to look back at previous years!
