WHAT IS DIABETES?
Diabetes is a metabolic disease in which a person has high blood glucose levels also known as high blood sugar. Glucose is one of the most important substances that cells use in order to produce energy, but in order for glucose to enter these cells, 2 conditions are required: the cells must have 'doors' called receptors, and a hormone called insulin must be available to 'unlock' these receptors. A lack in receptors or insulin will lead to glucose accumulating in the blood stream with negative effect on your health.
Depending of which part of this mechanism is faulty, there are 2 types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the insulin producing cells in the pancreas are destroyed which leads to high blood sugar. Type 2 diabetes occurs when there is enough insulin but there are not enough receptors on the cells to allow glucose to enter, thus causing an increase in blood sugar.
