Victoria is determined to make her character, Barbara Kay Scott, a credit to the teen detective fiction genre while also making sense of the real world around her. It is America, 1963. Cultural institutions slip off the foundation of faith upon which this society was built. Murder, evil, scandal and prejudice shatter society. Victoria strives to control her book as she cannot hope to shape reality. She knows eventually she must emerge in this society, able to cope while remaining true to herself. As she contrives a satisfactory ending to her story, real life provides no neat endings only consequences of the journey which will endure the rest of her life.
