We're Going to Need a Higher Fence contains poems that were inspired by a line in Robert Frost's piece "Mending Wall:" "Before I built a wall I'd ask to know what I was walling in or walling out." It would seem that we look to nature for some kind of healing or finding answers to life's problems, but often our surroundings provide more questions, no peace, and even unexpected violence. Instead of walling out the "bad things," that seem to find a way in anyway, maybe the answer is to try and exist side by side with these dark shadows. There is no escaping the unknown, disease, pain, etc: these are things we will never have control over. I struggle to find acceptance of this concept, but maybe struggle is okay.
