Dark magic is afoot in London. Robert Cairn suspects that there is something sinister about classmate Antony Ferrera. Egyptologist Dr. Cairn, Robert's father, suspects that Ferrera may be wielding a malignant influence on those around him. When Cavanagh befriends Professor Deeping on board the Mandalay, little does he realize that he has entered into a world of Eastern assassins, the world of the Hashish?n. For Deeping has stolen a holy relic, a slipper belonging to Mohammed, and is now being pursued by someone named Hassan of Aleppo, whose duty it is to guard and return the relic. For an infidel to merely touch the box where the relic resides results in the removal of their hand. But Deeping wants to commit the ultimate sacrilege and put the relic on display in a museum.
