Nathan Reynolds drowned in the Salt River, but someone shot him in the head before he died. Amanda Winters, Nathan's godmother and best friend to Nathan's mother Dinah, believes that the murder is linked to the ten-year-old disappearance of Nathan's father, corporate attorney Tom Reynolds. While fighting a debilitating panic disorder, Amanda sets out to help Detective Roy Staatz of the Tempe PD solve Nathan's murder. Amanda's son Jeff, Nathan's college roommate, finds some of Tom Reynolds' old case notes and threatening emails from Pima environmental-activist Anthony Hunter, which clearly show that Hunter holds Tom's client, cotton magnate Dieter Imfeldt, and his illegal use of DDT, responsible for his wife's death. Following the evidence Tom Reynolds was planning to use against his client in Pima tribal hearings, Amanda and her quirky Aunt Sally drive north to Jerome to check out an abandoned copper mine on Imfeldt's property. After a suspicious landslide blocks the mine entrance, the women go deeper into the cavern and find a grave that is later discovered to hold Tom Reynolds' remains. Amanda, husband Terry, and Aunt Sally travel to Mexico, where Amanda finds more clues linking Nathan's murder to his father's disappearance. Can she solve both murders--Nathan's and his father's and bring the culprits to justice?
